. the transit situation at the local areas where we find molly in washington what is going on there? >> over the course of yesterday, today, tomorrow, nearly 14,000 flights will have been cancelled because of sandy. this is we're talking flights in and out of the northeast corridor of the u.s. usually one of the busiest sections of the country whit comes to daily air travel. that is 13600 flights cancelled yesterday. 7600 flights cancelled today. and more than 4800 cancelled for tomorrow, we expect that number to go up. if you have a flight be sure to call haerkd sheer how one official explained it this is similar to what you can see in a snow storm. with the absence of snow. airlines moving planes out and work for the storms to pass then work quickly to resume normal operations afterwards. >> there are not a lot of stranded passengers here. there is so much advanced notice about this storm people were able to decide to stay with a friend. we have found a handful of people who are here for the night. we talk to them including one italian student trying to get back to her college in new york.

there with the local police chief and i can tell you, it was absolutely extraordinary, the amount of damage that was done by hurricane sandy, erin. you know, there's gas leaks there that have continued to be a problem. we've seen a stream of gas trucks go across the bridge onto those islands to try to shut off the gas. there was one particular area up there in the area of brick where about three or four football fields' worth of houses had been burnt to the ground by fire started by gas leaks so it's a big problem. you can smell it in the air. this was the first opportunity we've had to get over there with our cameras, we were among the first to do so, and there were houses literally in the middle of the street that had been picked up by the force of the ocean and dumped in the middle of the road, still intact. we saw sink holes, one of them had huge full size pickup truck up to its windows in this sink hole. the sand, the dunes used to be about 12 feet tall, if you like. they are now nothing. they have gone, and houses have been exposed, they've been toppled over. the force of the water ju

but i've seen governors and local officials have gotten out earlier. they put up the information. >> you mentioned the magnitude of this storm. can you give us a sense of what's mobilized to deal with some of the impact? >> well with we've got teams basically all the way from down in north carolina where it was earlier impacting the outer banks all the way to maine. we have teams in states as far as inland as west virginia. we've been moving generators, moving basic supplies that we would need after the storm. so, it's a large response area but we also have a lot of good teams with the states and their folks working together getting ready. >> power outages are expected to be one of the big impacts of this storm. is there any way to prevent a power outage, to kind of ward it off or do you have to just be prepared to deal with the aftermath? >> you need be prepared. again, we're not expecting the winds themselves inland to be that damaging, the homes and structures but we do think trees will get impacted. limbs coming down the biggest problem. >> you told your staff on sunday to prepare fo
